6th Grade Chuck Close Inspired Self Portraits

6th graders learned about the incredible artist, Chuck Close, and found inspiration in his style of art for their self portrait project. This was a time consuming project, but the enthusiastic 6th graders did such a phenomenal job!

For our project, students created their self portraits using grid drawing. In each grid box, students added different shapes and symbols. Students used color pencils to color in their portraits.

Kindergarten "Big Face" Portraits

Kindergarten had a blast creating these large "Big Face" Portraits in art! We had so much fun with our large portraits!

For our portraits, students used paint to fill in our hair and faces. Each student gave their portrait unique faces using markers. At the end of our project, we held our portraits over our faces to surprise our kindergarten teacher! We had so much fun!

Awesome job, Kindergarten! Have a great time at your Moving Up ceremony next week!

1st Grade Cupcake Pop Art

Cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcakes... who doesn't love cupcakes?

For a fun mixed media project, students in the first grade learned all about artists who use food as themes in their art as well as the Pop Art movement. Students loved looking at images of giant ice cream sculptures and paintings that made the desserts look actually frosted!

First graders created their own 2D cupcakes using a variety of materials. For our backgrounds, students created patterns using crayon and watercolor paint. We 'frosted' our cupcakes by creating our own puffy paint using shaving cream, glue, and paint.

These came out so delicious looking! Check out the student work:

Fantastic job, friends!!

7th Grade Hand Contour Drawings

In this mixed media drawing unit, 7th graders learned about contour drawings (drawings that focus on the basic outlines of an object). We practiced different types of contour drawings using various props, such as manikins, rubber ducks, and soup cans! For our project, each seventh grader created a contour drawing of their hand!

For the background, students were able to experiment with different watercolor techniques. This was fun and messy! Students were able to add salt to their wet watercolor paint, create a watercolor-crayon resist, wet on wet blending, or even use eye droppers to add a splatter effect to their paper. 7th graders were so creative and spontaneous during this portion of the art making process!

Check out our cool contour hand drawings!
