3rd Grade Fruit Still Life

3rd Graders did a fantastic job on their first project that focused on observational drawings. Students created observational drawings of different fruits. After painting the fruit with watercolors, students created a construction paper background. They focused on designing a wallpaper background- making the patterns with wonderful construction paper crayons!

3rd Grade Surrealist Birdies

3rd graders loved learning about the wacky art and artists of the Surrealist art movement. For a fun project students created birds with long legs, similar to Dali's elephant paintings. We used watercolor paints and markers in this bright and colorful project!

3rd Grade Van Gogh Sunflowers

Students in the 3rd grade recently learned about Vincent Van Gogh, different types of sunflowers, and collaboration.

Using their unique creativeness, each student designed and created a sunflower. They were able to use a variety of paints the results were fantastic! Students found inspiration in the different types of sunflowers that we learned about in class!

After that, we took our sunflowers and added them to our sunflower vase! Each student has their art represented in this collaborative piece!

Art Happenings- AKAG Field Trip

There has been a lot of exciting things happening in the world of Art at SJV!

Two weeks ago students in grades K-8 enjoyed an exciting field trip to the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo! Students loved touring the gallery with trained and knowledgeable docents!

Students thought that the most popular art at the gallery was the work by contemporary German artist, Anselm Kiefer. This show, which is in the gallery until November, features different paintings and sculptures by the artist. Students loved the large scale of the paintings!

3rd Grade Watercolor Self Portraits

3rd graders created beautiful watercolor backgrounds and traced the contour lines of their faces for their expressive self portraits.They did such a fantastic job with this project... especially on their watercolor backgrounds! Each background is so unique and colorful!

3rd Grade Modern Totem Pole

In a lesson connecting to a Social Studies unit, 3rd graders learned about historical Totem Poles. 

Students created a modern version of a Totem Pole using construction paper and paint. They worked in pairs focusing on a different animals. 

We recycled boxes for the structure of the Totem Pole.

Art Club II

Art Club's Session II (3rd-5th grade) recently wrapped up. The theme of that session was "Art From Around the World".

We had so much fun stamping our passports and "flying" around the world each club meeting. From Henna in India, Prayer Flags in Tibet, Koi Fish in Japan, and Chinese New Year Dragons, the students in Art Club did such a fantastic job!

Here is some additional artwork created during that time:

Tibetan Prayer Flags hung proudly in the school hallway. These contained goals, aspirations, and our prayers.

3rd Grade Modern Silhouettes

Can you guess which third graders these are?

This quarter, 3rd graders created beautiful silhouettes with a modern twist! Students filled their silhouettes with meaningful images that reflected their interests and personalities! Students used watercolor pencils to fill their pictures with awesome bright colors! These are so fun and reflect each student wonderfully!

 Here are some close up details of the student work:

 Third grade worked so hard on this project. Even though the images were large and there was a lot of space on the silhouettes, students filled their silhouettes with images and beautiful colors! Excellent job 3rd grade!

 

Here is another project we did for fun. Using complementary colors we created a Pop Art masterpiece! It's Quack-tast-ic!

3rd Grade Sea Turtles

For their first project third graders learned about Sea Turtles and how that species is an endangered species. Many artists create art to draw awareness to different causes that are important to them.

For our project, we create bright and colorful Sea Turtles using chalk pastels and glue. We used the glue to trace the pencil lines of our turtles. When the glue dried, it served as a border for our messy, but beautiful, chalk pastels! We discussed the techniques of blending and how to create highlights and shadows using this medium!
