Art Club Happenings: Paper Bag Puppets

Art Club's 4th and 5th grade group became puppeteers as they designed and created their own paper bag puppets. Students worked with materials such as pipe cleaners, markers, recycled paper, and foam shapes to decorate their puppets. Students really loved playing with the puppets afterwards!

 

5th Grade Personalized Soup Cans

5th Grade students at SJV recently learned about the exciting and POPular artist, Andy Warhol. Students loved Warhol's use of bright colors and playful imagery.

Students donned the roles of chefs and designers in this project. They had to create their own flavor of soup and design the label for their soup cans. 5th graders chose some wacky soup flavors including Bacon Cheeseburger, Pizza, Goldfish Crackers, and even Candy flavored soups!

To design their labels, students studied Campbell's soup packages. Using watercolor paints students created fun labels for their unique soups!

5th Grade Scream Paintings

Earlier this year students in the 5th grade learned about Edvard Munch and his famous image, The Scream!

In this lesson students discussed the different reasons people might feel the need to scream, whether it be in fear, surprise, or even joy!

Their task was to create their own image of the famous Scream, with themselves as the subject. Infused in this reproduction, students were to include visuals of why they might scream.

Art Happenings- AKAG Field Trip

There has been a lot of exciting things happening in the world of Art at SJV!

Two weeks ago students in grades K-8 enjoyed an exciting field trip to the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo! Students loved touring the gallery with trained and knowledgeable docents!

Students thought that the most popular art at the gallery was the work by contemporary German artist, Anselm Kiefer. This show, which is in the gallery until November, features different paintings and sculptures by the artist. Students loved the large scale of the paintings!

5th Grade Self Portraits

5th graders created colorful self portraits using various color pencil and printmaking techniques! They did such a fantastic job in all aspects of this project- they really hit it out of the park!

For our backgrounds, students used recycled paper towel rolls and paint to created a fun and colorful 'print'. Students were encouraged to used abstract colors in their self portraits using colored pencils!

As the school year quickly comes to an end, all grades at SJV are working on Self Portraits! From paintings to mixed media collages, students are doing such a fantastic job!

Art Club II

Art Club's Session II (3rd-5th grade) recently wrapped up. The theme of that session was "Art From Around the World".

We had so much fun stamping our passports and "flying" around the world each club meeting. From Henna in India, Prayer Flags in Tibet, Koi Fish in Japan, and Chinese New Year Dragons, the students in Art Club did such a fantastic job!

Here is some additional artwork created during that time:

Tibetan Prayer Flags hung proudly in the school hallway. These contained goals, aspirations, and our prayers.

5th Grade Surrealism Collage

5th graders learned about the wild world of Surrealism- dreamlike images that can have some wacky things happening in the art!

Using recycled magazines, 5th graders created their own Surrealism collages. Each student created their own story behind their collage creature. They were wacky and silly! Check out a few of the finished artwork:

5th Grade 2D and 3D Food Art

5th graders dove into Food Art during 2nd Quarter. They studied the work of artists Wayne Thiebaud and Claes Oldenburg.

In our Unit, 5th graders created 2D still life drawings of either a fruit or a vegetable. We practiced contour drawings and used watercolor pencils!

In the second part of our unit, 5th graders created 3D sculptures of any type of food they wanted! We used Styrofoam, tin foil, plaster wrap, and paint to create our sculptures!
