2nd Grade Charlie Harper Inspired Cardinals

Snow has hopefully come to an end during this long winter in WNY! During the snowier months, 2nd graders created winter scenes inspired by illustrator Charlie Harper. Harper is well known for his illustrations of birds, especially Cardinals! 

Students loved the bright and simplistic shapes and lines of Harper's birds. Using white paint and construction paper, 2nd graders created their own Cardinals in a snowy winter landscape!

2nd Grade Oil Pastel Kandinsky Circles

Students in the 2nd grade recently explored the world of Oil Pastels and Wassily Kandinsky. After studying some of his paintings, students loved his use of bright colors and shapes! Here is a painting by Kandinsky that inspired us!

2nd Graders also loved working with oil pastels! They enjoyed getting messy with this art material!

Art Happenings- AKAG Field Trip

There has been a lot of exciting things happening in the world of Art at SJV!

Two weeks ago students in grades K-8 enjoyed an exciting field trip to the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo! Students loved touring the gallery with trained and knowledgeable docents!

Students thought that the most popular art at the gallery was the work by contemporary German artist, Anselm Kiefer. This show, which is in the gallery until November, features different paintings and sculptures by the artist. Students loved the large scale of the paintings!

2nd Grade Collage Self Portraits

2nd graders created self portraits collages using a variety of mediums. Students were able to experiment with  watercolors in their backgrounds and show their personalities through their drawings and handwriting!

These are hanging right outside of the nurse's office! Check them out!

2nd Grade Oil Pastel Study

Second graders were introduced to oil pastels in a recent art class. They loved how the pastels had bright, vivid colors and were like a soft crayon! In this lesson students learned about different oil pastel techniques such as blending. We also studied colorful and bright art by Wassily Kandinsky.

Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's famous circle art, each student created their own oil pastel circle on a 6"x 6" square. The squares were hung in a grid pattern in the hallway!

2nd Grade How I Show My Faith Art

This year in the Catholic Church we are celebrating the Year of Faith. Inspired by this celebration, 2nd graders created art work showing how they show their faith everyday! We learned about warm and cool colors by creating a tissue paper collage base. We used watercolor pencils to draw a faith picture!

2nd Grade Fantastic Felines

Laurel Burch was an exciting artist who loved to paint colorful, patterned cats! Students in the 2nd grade loved learning about the playful subject matter of her work! We created a watercolor crayon resist to fill our cats with bright, beautiful colors!

2nd Grade Snowy Night Collage

In a project that mixed Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night and our current winter season, 2nd graders created snowy nighttime silhouettes!

We created collage scenes using different layers of paper. We even created swirling night skies using paint, watercolor, and salt! The second grade worked really hard on their silhouettes! They were all so unique!

2nd Grade Britto Inspired Still Life

In 2nd grade, students learned about the bright and colorful world of contemporary artist, Romero Britto. Britto loves to create paintings that have vivid colors, fun patterns, and thick, bold outlines.

For our project, students learned about still life paintings. Still life art is a picture of a scene that contains inanimate, or not living, objects. Still life is a famous subject for artists.

We created still life watercolor paintings of flowers in a vase inspired by Romero Britto! Here are some examples of student work:
