4th Grade Starry Night Group Work

The 4th grade class worked together in groups on for their final project of the year. Inspired by a Van Gogh poster in the classroom students recreated the Starry Night in groups of 4. Together each member of their group drew one section of The Starry Night. Using teamwork students also discussed the processes of adding paint and oil pastel to each of their sections for uniformity.

Art Club Happenings: Paper Bag Puppets

Art Club's 4th and 5th grade group became puppeteers as they designed and created their own paper bag puppets. Students worked with materials such as pipe cleaners, markers, recycled paper, and foam shapes to decorate their puppets. Students really loved playing with the puppets afterwards!

 

4th Grade Watercolor "Stained Glass"

Students in the 4th grade recently completed a wonderful art lesson all about watercolor!

In this lesson students experimented with different watercolor techniques, discovered the history of stained glass, learned about artists Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Comfort Tiffany, and even reflected upon the beautiful stained glass at our church!

Inspired by stained glass in our church, students designed their own stained glass work of art, filling in the colors using watercolor paint!

You can see these fabulous paintings at our Open House on Thursday, Feb. 6th from 6:30-8:00pm! They are located at the cafeteria entrance way!

Art Happenings- AKAG Field Trip

There has been a lot of exciting things happening in the world of Art at SJV!

Two weeks ago students in grades K-8 enjoyed an exciting field trip to the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo! Students loved touring the gallery with trained and knowledgeable docents!

Students thought that the most popular art at the gallery was the work by contemporary German artist, Anselm Kiefer. This show, which is in the gallery until November, features different paintings and sculptures by the artist. Students loved the large scale of the paintings!

4th grade Georgia O'Keeffe Inspired Oil Pastel Flowers

4th graders were excited to explore the medium of oil pastels for their latest project. They did such a fantastic job blending and creating bright flowers inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe!

Art Club II

Art Club's Session II (3rd-5th grade) recently wrapped up. The theme of that session was "Art From Around the World".

We had so much fun stamping our passports and "flying" around the world each club meeting. From Henna in India, Prayer Flags in Tibet, Koi Fish in Japan, and Chinese New Year Dragons, the students in Art Club did such a fantastic job!

Here is some additional artwork created during that time:

Tibetan Prayer Flags hung proudly in the school hallway. These contained goals, aspirations, and our prayers.

4th Grade Henri Matisse Paper Collage

In 4th grade we found inspiration in Henri Matisse's art! We loved his bright colors and playful compositions.  We love Matisse so much that our resident art room fly is named Henri!

We created colorful cut paper art. Matisse, during his old age, 'painted with scissors'. We created collages inspired by his Goldfish painting! Students were able to create their own unique backgrounds, fishbowls, and scenes. They did such a fantastic job- each picture was so different and wonderful!

4th Grade 3D Movement Figures

This week 4th graders took home their 3D figures inspired by Keith Haring's art. Using pipe cleaners, tin foil,  plaster wrap and paint, our figures captured the principle of art, movement.

The 4th grade did such an awesome job! These made us all want to dance!

4th Grade Keith Haring Movement Figures

In 4th grade we have been learning about artist, Keith Haring. Haring was a very popular artist who created fun and colorful cartoon-like figures. His figures did not have features, but were filled with bold color and outline. His figures often looked as if they were dancing!

Students learned about Haring's life, inspirations, and legacy in the art world. In this lesson, they also learned about complementary colors! These are colors located across from each other on the color wheel. (red & green, yellow & purple, blue & orange!) Complementary colors, when put next to one another, are appear very bright!

In this project, students created their own Keith Haring figures depicting movement four times. For each figure, the student had to use a pair of complementary colors. The fourth box was a free choice and the student could use any set of colors to paint in their figure!

This project was so fun and made us want to dance!
