1st Grade Elmer the Elephant Collage

  

First Grade students read the book "Elmer the Elephant". It's a great story about a patchwork elephant who lives in a colorful jungle. Students created watercolor collages using warm colors or cool colors to give Elmer a day or night time scene!

Art Happenings- AKAG Field Trip

There has been a lot of exciting things happening in the world of Art at SJV!

Two weeks ago students in grades K-8 enjoyed an exciting field trip to the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo! Students loved touring the gallery with trained and knowledgeable docents!

Students thought that the most popular art at the gallery was the work by contemporary German artist, Anselm Kiefer. This show, which is in the gallery until November, features different paintings and sculptures by the artist. Students loved the large scale of the paintings!

I Ain't Gonna Paint No More 1st Grade Portraits

This year's second graders absolutely loved reading the book "I Ain't Gonna Paint No More" by Karen Beaumont last June! The book is full of great colors, bold brushstrokes, and a silly character who paints everything... even himself!

Here are some wonderful self portraits of SJV students, all inspired by the book!

1st Grade Cupcake Pop Art

Cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcakes... who doesn't love cupcakes?

For a fun mixed media project, students in the first grade learned all about artists who use food as themes in their art as well as the Pop Art movement. Students loved looking at images of giant ice cream sculptures and paintings that made the desserts look actually frosted!

 

 

First graders created their own 2D cupcakes using a variety of materials. For our backgrounds, students created patterns using crayon and watercolor paint. We 'frosted' our cupcakes by creating our own puffy paint using shaving cream, glue, and paint.

1st Grade Groovy Guitars

In a lesson connecting to music class, students learned all about guitars in Art! 1st graders painted their own guitars, assembling their own instruments using paper, buttons, glue, and glitter!

Students did such a fantastic job creating colorful and unique guitars!

1st Grade Matisse Inspired Apple Paintings

1st graders created these beautiful watercolor paintings inspired by Henri Matisse. We learned about warm vs. cool colors, perspective, and watercolor painting techniques!

1st Grade "Where the Wild Things Are" Creatures

First graders took on the roll of book illustrators by creating crazy creatures inspired by Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are!

Our creatures are all unique and wild! We used patterns and a watercolor crayon resist to fill our creatures with crazy colors! Since we all loved the part of the book where the Wild Things have a 'wild rumpus' we decorated our creatures with construction paper party accessories!

These came out so fun!

Wonderful wacky work, 1st grade!

1st Grade Pointillism Snowmen

Students dove into the world of Pointillism in a fun, dot-filled painting project! Pointillism features paintings composed of tons of tiny dots of paint. First graders created their very own happy snowmen inspired by the movement!

These were hung next to the 2nd grader's Snowy Silhouettes to create a wonderful winter display!

1st Grade Jim Dine Pop Art Hearts

Art work is starting to pop up in the hallways of SJV!

Here is some colorful and bright oil pastel work done by the 1st graders. We were inspired by contemporary artist, Jim Dine. Dine creates paintings and sculptures using hearts as the subject matter. We all agreed that his work was positive, fun, and beautiful! We also separated our background and hearts using warm and cool colors!
